Program & Product Management

The prime requirement of almost any business is to get a meaningful product into the market, on time and on cost.  This requires a passion for innovation and the ability to manage the development process to meet performance, cost, quality and schedule goals.  Inevitability tradeoffs must be made during development and the ability to quickly make the correct decisions can make the difference between success and failure.  The ability to communicate the necessary information to all involved parties and incorporate feedback is crucial to making those correct decisions.   The complexity and structure of this program management  process needs to be finely tuned to the organization,  the product and the target market/environment for the product.   Products like a simple website may require minimum management, one just does it while complex systems such as flight control software will require a large team and extensive product and program management coordination.

A wide variety of development and program management techniques ranging from scrum and kanban to waterfall are available and numerous tools and applications exist to implement almost any process that is desired.   Numerous collaboration tools such as Slack and Teams are available to enhance the communication and decision making process. Choosing the methodology and tools can be a process by itself.  However the basics are universal:

  • Solid set of requirements
  • Realistic estimates of the level of effort
  • Methods to track progress
  • Efficient communication and decision making
  • Constant feedback and improvement
